Facial Recognition Turnstiles at COFCO Nutrition & Health Research Institute
Client Background
Founded in 1949, COFCO Corporation is a major Chinese state-owned enterprise and one of the world’s leading agricultural and food businesses. Its international supply chain connects agricultural sourcing, storage, logistics, processing and trade, serving markets around the world.
COFCO Nutrition & Health Research Institute (NHRI) serves as the Group’s core research and development platform. The institute supports innovation in nutrition, food quality and safety, and product development across categories including grains, edible oils, sugar, alcoholic beverages, meat and tea.
By connecting scientific research with product development and industrial applications, NHRI helps turn advances in food science into practical solutions for the agri-food sector. Its achievements include a China Patent Award Gold Medal and two National Science and Technology Progress Awards.
Project Background
COFCO NHRI installed a facial recognition turnstile system supplied by Shenzhen Iron Corps Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., the company behind VELAXIZ.
The installation introduces biometric identity verification at the pedestrian access point, bringing an additional layer of entrance control to the institute’s working environment.
Project Overview
Access Control in a Research Environment
Research facilities must balance convenient everyday access with the need to control entry into their working environment. The entrance is an important point for establishing that control before people move further into a building.
For this type of setting, a practical access control approach combines identity verification with a physical passage barrier. Recognition establishes who is requesting entry; authorization determines whether passage should be allowed. These are distinct steps in managing access.
The Turnstile Solution
Facial Recognition at the Entrance
Facial recognition turnstiles use biometric verification as part of the access process. This approach can reduce reliance on presenting a physical card during routine entry and help limit the use of borrowed credentials.
Physical Control of Pedestrian Passage
Turnstiles provide a physical control point through which people pass. When connected to an access control system, the barrier can be released following successful verification and authorization, linking the identity check with the passage itself.
The COFCO NHRI installation brings these elements together in a facial recognition turnstile system for the institute.
Project Significance
This case adds a research institute within COFCO Group to Iron Corps’ portfolio of pedestrian access control installations. It demonstrates the application of facial recognition turnstiles in an organization focused on scientific research, nutrition and food innovation.
For similar facilities, the project provides a relevant reference when considering how biometric verification and physical entrance control can work together in daily operations.
