Brushless DC and servo systems can both be used to drive automatic pedestrian gates, but they are not identical. The correct choice depends on required motion precision, operating frequency, gate configuration, control strategy and project budget.
A brushless DC, or BLDC, motor operates without the mechanical brushes used in traditional brushed motors. This reduces brush-related wear and makes BLDC motors suitable for equipment that performs frequent opening and closing movements. In pedestrian gates, brushless drives can provide smooth operation, relatively low noise and good durability.
A servo system adds precise closed-loop control. The controller continuously monitors parameters such as position and movement so the gate can react accurately to commands. For premium speed gates and demanding applications, this precise motion control can be valuable.
Servo systems are particularly strong where highly controlled acceleration, deceleration and barrier position are important. This can create a refined opening and closing experience in high-end commercial entrances. Brushless systems can also provide smooth performance, but the control architecture is typically different.
Both technologies can provide long service life when the complete mechanism is properly engineered. Motor type alone does not determine durability. Gearbox design, bearings, mechanical alignment, control software and daily operating frequency also matter.
A quiet motor does not automatically create a quiet gate. Mechanical structure, cabinet rigidity, barrier design and installation quality all influence sound. For hotel, office and premium commercial environments, the entire mechanism should therefore be evaluated as one system.
A standard commercial project may perform well with a high-quality brushless drive. A premium high-frequency entrance requiring highly precise motion may benefit from servo technology. The correct decision should be made according to the total gate design rather than simply selecting the more expensive motor.
Is servo always better than brushless DC?
Both brushless DC and servo drives can be suitable when properly engineered
It can provide highly precise motion control, but passage speed also depends on barrier movement, sensors and access-control logic. Internal Links: R&D Capability, VX.LB01, VX.LB09, VX.LB11.
